There’s biographical things like my not really being a nerd per se, being older without the happy ending, etc. but the core of it is that where he views gaining self-confidence as a path up and out, I’ve learned that having self-confidence means just that, and nothing more.

I know that I have value, that I’m perceptive, quick, and kind, and that I strive with each day to live honorably. I always have. But I also know that none of that means that anyone else will, or even should, value me; those are goods in themselves, not guarantees of good favor.
