it's a complex issue and accountability to shareholders is an obscenity when it is interpreted (as it has been for the last 25 years) to mean accountability to quarter over quarter gains in stock price

shareholder value is not only good, it is absolutely the last word in business ethics, period, any other system is Wrong with a capital W it is good because it is easy to understand, easy to implement, and easy to transparently manipulate through the regulatory state

if you don't like what businesses are doing and think Something Must Be Done you are 1. probably wrong but 2. very very dumb if you think the right way to do this is by perverting the relationship between agents and principals rather than just dangling incentives on owners
