The failure mode is that executives get to do whatever they want, the upside is that "whatever they want" often includes things like "Telling China where to get off". Legally enforcing "money at all costs" is consistent, but not good.

it's a complex issue and accountability to shareholders is an obscenity when it is interpreted (as it has been for the last 25 years) to mean accountability to quarter over quarter gains in stock price

ehhh this always seemed more like an excuse for bullshit than an actual thing. "this scam I pulled that got me millions in bonuses and blew my stock options through the roof, well, did it all for the SHAREHOLDERS donchaknow, blame THEM"
