am I imagining my recollection that this was partly because the prehuman apex predators that ate bison were hunted to extinction so their population exploded anyway welcome back buddieshttps://twitter.com/brettachapman/status/1184469178075549696 …

Before Americans arrived on the Great Plains, the number of buffalo was so staggering that one Native American hunter said it literally took hours for a single herd to cross a stream. Not long after the U.S. came along, they were no more and the ecosystem ruined in the Dust Bowl pic.twitter.com/DSBJ6LINwx

That's a LOT of buffalo chips. Half the country was effectively a buffalo pasture

Well it's certainly true that the arrival of humans around the end of the last ice age coincided with the demise of almost all megafauna in the Americas

Hm, I'd wonder if there were ever any apex predators suitable for hunting or eating. Why hunt sabertooth cat when bison or tastier and less dangerous (sort of)? Thanks for inspiring thought.https://owlcation.com/stem/Prehistoric-Predators-of-Ice-Age-North-America …

Most of what we think we know about the activities of Clovis era hunters is at least half bunk and the rest is subject to a lot of interpretation. But yeah once upon an idea that was how we characterized it

I heard that native americans aren't actually native to the great plains area, like they came there 300 years ago before 1700s, so actually buffaloes would be extinct anyway(in another 300-400 years) even without white people hunting them

If you're very curious about the subject, I found this to be very well done. Tldr, confluence of climate change and earlier megafaunal extinctions left a huge niche for the bison to occupypic.twitter.com/wUZNmSNfCx

Those extinctions happened 10,000 years ago though. The more immediate cause of the bison population boom was probably the death of millions of the Native Americans who hunted them, due to diseases introduced by Europeans. (This is the account given in 1491 by Charles Mann.)
