I'm not sure any outcome other than "something like this" was ever possible once it was clear the clusterfuck-coalition of armed sunni groups wasn't going to overthrow Assad. At that point it was just "who has something left to negotiate for".

As for "ISIS", anybody in jail is someone not important enough to be dead. The only reason they're in jail is prob b/c their home countries (like Iraqis or Jordanians) refuse to take them back.

There is little chance any pullout would look good tho this could've been better by giving the Kurds a longer heads up. Unless the US fought RU directly Assad was staying. It was a stalemate. The ME is a clusterfuck of tribal warfare & US involvement their should be lowered.

I understand people not wanting the US to be totally isolationist & I agree to some extent. Being more strategic in what we do in the ME doesn't make us isolationist. We still have the most international bases by far. The ME is just too complicated for anyone to "fix" frankly.

Yeah, sorry wasn't clear. I wasn't necessarily assuming your view. Just the idea, and those who hold it, of being very involved in the ME.

We were also keeping regular air superiority in play. So, we had 1000 in country but way more supporting outside of country. That figure is a bit skewed in that sense. The situation was not going to change there. And, we went from being a short term thing to 9 years. 1/2

No one is saying it's good. Reality is that nothing was going to change & it costs a lot of money+manpower to keep a stalemate. And, it may even be the case Turkey was readying to do this regardless. Erdogan has become increasingly disruptive outside his borders (see Cyprus) 2/2

Erdogan has been manuevering for oil in the Med again. And, the Greeks are feeling the pressure. So is Israel. Since Erdogan took over they've been going downhill.
