I don't see any kind of external imposition of liberalization of China. It's just a matter of containment.

The problem is that Russia is trying to restore the USSR and may do so. And much of Chinese history is pretty authoritarian and the Communists leveraged that while claiming to stamp it out. Hard to beat historical momentum in ancient societies. Being a good example is best.

Too late. The time to contain China was 20 years ago. Now they have Western know-how, they are prepared for hostile US actions and plenty of countries will be happy to do the business with China. The Cold war was only won because Soviet economy did not work.
