To a certain extent, but there's a lot of lifestyle inflation at play in those situations, too. Feeling entitled to sending kids to private schools, etc.

I was a fac brat in a prep school, and I distinctly remember a certain classmate claiming to be middle class by referencing the cost of yacht sails as a burden. His sister threw a tantrum when the family got a A4 rather than an A8, b/c "that's what poor ppl drive".

This is so weird to me, me and my wife's combined income doesn't break 6 figures and we apparently live rather more comfortably than you, entirely based on location.

Tho I do think that it's likely ONLY housing that differs? Books and pans and blankets cost the same everywhere. A hamburger at a restaurant costs about the same. Groceries cost the same. ...yes?

I mean the variance in food and clothing costs is probably not precisely nil, but it's not a major factor, no. Except maybe how often we eat out vs eigen.

Exactly. I think that cool urban living can't help but tempt one. But...even then...assume you eat 21 meals per week out. How much does that boost CoL? $400/week = $20k/yr?

you could spend way more than that if you wanted I'm not in a big city, and I have multiple places within walking of my work where I could drop $80-$100 on a meal for just me if I wanted (sometimes the food is even worth it)

The most expensive restaurant in town is a 5m walk away Can't imagine I'll ever want to go there I had a Nice Meal in NYC last weekend and while it was an Experience I'm not sure it was worth a repeat
