hmmm bravery is mostly only praised as such when it is seen as advancing a noble cause, or when historical distance is great what acts of bravery are praised today? and what does this say about what we value now vs in the past?

Valorizing, well, valor, served a number of purposes (including puffing up your enemies to make yourself look good) but it's not clear any of them were really all that socially valuable in a global sense.

I think the experience of warfare makes a stronger case for negative than positive sum, thus my "ish" above. Note that we've been able to maintain a military while largely ditching the idea of valor being generally good, now it's only good if you're brave for the right team.
