I mean this seriously Was listening to Durant last night at 3am while leveling a priest because insomnia and he covered the medieval history of translations and universities and language Incredibly impressive how really every scholar in Europe just communicated in Latin

To hear him tell it, the educated in Europe were genuinely integrated in a period of massive cultural fragmentation The abandonment of a common (and arcane) scholarly tongue seems like a real loss for the learned And also cuts us off from our roots

I’ve worked with Latin a lot, and am doing so presently, but what it seems like he’s doing here, trying to sacralize the language itself into a font of meaning/identify, is dumb language and consciousness are fragmentary by nature; when we append this we only breed ignorance

hm why is there no meaning to be had from language? this seems deeply incorrect to me, can you explain it? should also note that this isnt durants work it's mine

language is kind of an entropic substance that we pretend, isn’t as in, the content of signs is an unstable operation between concrete signifiers & abstract signifieds imo this doesn’t mean “everything is meaningless”, but more like our intuitive idea of meaning, is Bonkers
