the "trial balance" report which includes every balance sheet account uses the *batch/post date* so if you post across periods it'll mess up the balance sheet but you won't see this in the general ledger overview unless you run the report

this would be a minor irritant if it was easy to reverse a given transaction action for anything other than manual journal entries, it is not

example: I handle the AP (but it's the same on the AR side) and if you accidentally post a batch of invoices across periods, you can't just hit a button to perfectly reverse it you have to reverse it by hand, as a mirror image of how you posted it originally

(Like, an invoice posted in period 8 but on 9/1/2019 has to be voided in period 8 with a batch date of 9/1/2019)

and god forbid you paid those invoices before you caught the error now you have to void the check entry first in the same sort of way

and that's not all! you can post transactions as a batch, you can pay checks as a batch you can only void transactions one at a time. so if you post a batch of 30 AP invoices and then pay them...

you have to: -do some painfully complicated journal entries (but now the checks and invoices won't be linked to their entry in the account, and each invoice is probably going to a different expense account) or:

1. void the corresponding check 2. clone the invoice so you don't have to recreate it from scratch 3. carefully void the invoice as a perfect mirror image of the crossposted transaction (careful, voids aren't reversible!) 4. re-post the invoice correctly 5. re-run the checks

if there's a better way to do all of this please tell their customer support people because they don't know about it and if you're an accountant and know of a good reason to to log a transaction in one period and its post date in another please, please tell *me*
