wonder whether people who are aggressive, interpersonally, realize they're basically disincentivizing people who are more relaxed from interacting with them think there are short term wins from aggression but my hunch is the long term costs are substantial and cumulative

Sorry. I mean in ingroup/outgroup way. Positive reaction from the ingroup benefitting from your aggressiveness makes up for negative reaction from the outgroup you are aggressive toward. And even with no benefit, they may enjoy knowing their ally can be aggressive when needed.
