I missed out for almost a decade, despite living in [big city]. That's when I learned [laundry list of things that enrich my experience and inform my understanding] and got good. I didn't make many new friends during my solo quest (the 90s) and that's probably where I went wrong.

Only fair to concede that missing out was very simple then: unplug the tv and give it away; turn on classical radio; study nothing (with a cultural valence) newer than c.1908; don't frequent political Usenet groups. Did all of the above and still enjoyed L.A.

In a sense, I've missed out most of my life, and that's a blessing. Just didn't see the charm in most things. Reminds me of A Hunger Artist by Kafka. His best story I thought. http://www.zwyx.org/portal/kafka/kafka_hunger_artist.html …
