hm this seems to me to be correct I don't think the two are mutually exclusive; much of my irony posting is meta-sincerehttps://twitter.com/balajis/status/1161823260247412736 …

Irony is defensive, sincerity is offensive. Irony makes it hard to pin down someone’s position and thus to attack them. Sincerity furnishes the moral justification that allows someone to go on the offensive. It also often offends.

What movements have switched from irony to sincerity, and vice versa? Socialism seemed mostly ironic in the 90s if it existed at all but people are comfortable being sincere about it now Similarly Racism in several directions American patriotism is nearly purely ironic today

I wonder if Irony is the first stage of a intellectual flirtation. I find the most compelling examples offer a sincerity in conflict with competing thoughts.

This isn't exactly a "movement" per se, but Oliver Traldi's take on postmodernism seems relevant: "The “playful” terms and topics of the postmoderns retain a great deal of currency in academia and in social justice more broadly. But it is no longer a game" https://areomagazine.com/2018/01/08/postmodernism-isnt-playing-around-anymore/ …

Metafilter pioneered the SJW movement in the 00's. It started out ironic and then became sincere. 4chan pioneered the alt-right movement in the 00's. It started out ironic and then became sincere.

Comedy in many cases has moved from the ironic to the sincere. TV has transitioned from cribbed "Seinfeld" shows to "the Office" knock offs. Stand-ups have moved from the shocking to the confessional. David Foster Wallace shared this insight in interviews during the early aughts.

Trolling went from ironic to sincere in the late 00's, early 10's.
