I’d say any deep contradiction in society is like that: * mutually assured destruction * climate change / environmental damage * (previously) slavery * racism * factory farming

Most people, myself included for the most part, have very strong subconscious defense mechanisms to never really confront those ideas. People who do confront them are less able to function in polite society and seem to talk of nothing else.

Like John Brown clearly saw slavery for what it was, and tried a bunch of pretty desperate things to get that message out, eventually going on what he must’ve known was a suicide mission.
