lets begin with caricatures that I can attribute seamlessly to right and left right: dont show your ankles before you're married left: ackshually god will not smite you for showing your ankles so sex is exactly like buying a cheese or shaving you get the idea

framed a little more charitably, the left's critique I think should be acceptable even to most on the right: sexual mores are not cardinal values I don't think even tradcaths (but--?) would disagree that, say, wearing lipstick has varied in its moral status over time;

extrapolate from that and it's hard to defend any particular set of temporogeographically-bound norms at least in deontological terms so settle for virtue or for consequentialism but these are quite plastic, so

Anyway, I'm not a deontological sexual traditionalist. It's fine if you disagree I'm not proselytizing.

The problem is that in fact sex is not like buying a cheese along a few important axes, and you can't just toss deontology and immediately start screaming no gods no masters I mean you can and I kind of respect that but it comes with some problems

I was going to make some snark about dropping deontology and scream no gods no masters but what I really want to say is that given how much people trust deontologists the optimal consequentialist approach is to pretend to be a deontologist so; welcome to the ethics of boning

"the rules say we have to be consequentialists, but deontologists are good people, and virtue ethics work"
