it can be a hardship if you don't make much offering to pay does several things 1. it permits social leveling and people from different income brackets to maintain friendships without worrying about money 2. it can be an expression of care and thoughtfulness

3. it's an expression of trust. Offering financial support, even minor, requires a great deal of trust because it's a potentially painful boundary when overtrod or taken for granted. Offering to pay says partly "I trust you not to abuse this"

4. Related to three, it emphasizes that a relationship is sufficiently important that money becomes a means to maintain that relationship rather than something apart from it. Money is strictly separated from casual relationships.
