Amazing that once again the mainland Chinese government mostly cares about people throwing the flag into the harbor and mostly doesn't give a damn--at least publicly--about the rest of what's going on in Hong Kong.

I read a book about China-Taiwan relations written back around ~2005, which explained that the legitimacy of the CCP on the mainland is predicated around the "one China" principle, and "national unity" is a verbal tic in their state propaganda 1/

it's blindingly obvious that HKers don't want to be part of China, which is why China can't give them democracy (that leads down to self-determination). China's main concern is that the whole false edifice of "unity" among many culturally distinct regions falls over due to HK.
