comes from psychology. https://www.asanet.org/sites/default/files/attach/journals/mar15spqfeature.pdf … basically they polled people in the military and those of higher rank were more pessimistic than those at a lower rank of their relative movement, where higher rank officers were more accurate to their actual prospects

the idea is that trads already hold high social status so they don't see the benefit in flexible values while progs do b/c they're deprived relative to the trad
