eigenrobot added,
no, the oldest theme is Gilgamesh, not a villain except by modern morality and for different reasons, wanting it
It's not seen as immoral in Gilgamesh, just a fool's errand. Utnapishtim straight up tells Gilgamesh to not bother trying to become immortal because ultimately everyone dies. I think it backs Robot's point.
not sure I'd call that a taboo. contrast JK Rowling as robot does inc omments
Maybe not a hard taboo, but it was absolutely a "dismissal". A major theme of the epic is dealing with the powerlessness death gives us but that it's still an inevitability, even for the great heroes
I'm afraid I can do much but repeat: original tweet is "most disgusting desires" and quoted is "taboo". Dismissed and unatainable even for heroes is a different sort of dinosaur IMO and this would be clear if topic was not death
So his use of taboo specifically be too strong, but the theme of immortality in this life as not something humans get being one of our oldest literary themes still seems a valid point
so was not getting to the Moon, although I'm more interested in anti-aging than inmortality : D (still don't see way around piano dropping on you on 495th birthday) I just view the hostility as in quoted tweet entirely unwarranted, and most treatment in fiction stupidly cliche
