How valid is the commonly echoed complaint of the high functioning / high intelligence crowd that therapy isn’t effective bc they can’t find a therapist that is highly functioning / intelligent enough for them?

I felt this way for awhile. The therapist that ended up helping me the most wasn’t what I expected if I were to have tried to construct the “most qualified” therapist for me. If we knew what we *actually* needed then we prob could just self heal

Right, I feel like an inability to “trust the process” and play along clouded by valid historical cognitive/intellectual isolation might more often be at fault that people like to admit

Definitely agree. Same could be said for many trying to find life partners without success.

Yes! Totally agree. Thinking your friends and partners and people around you have to be AS smart as you perceive yourself to be along a limited dimension is a trap and a self defense thing that will limit your ability to connect with people who may enrich your life unpredictably

there's a fun bit about this in a Jonathan Frakes or whatever that authors name is book has a super smart character who gets sent to therapy at 17 or so rants about how much smarter he is than the therapist therapist coolly points out existence of domain-specific competence

I do think there’s something past that though, In how quick a therapist is to perceive what a patient is talking about - sure the learned skill of speaking in a way that’s audience appropriate but how fair is that

Yeah a good nuance to point out. All this being said, having had horrible therapists I can see how people come to any number of conclusions. Accountability + measurement of outcomes is hard because of privacy and very latent results

          Replying to @eigenrobot @liminal_warmth and

Therapist has to a) be quick enough to come up with that and b) be able to sustain a challenge to their therapeutic authority based on allegedly higher intelligence.
