So I'm pretty sure INCELS are not a new thing

Not only visibility, but exposure to harassment? It seems like it was once fairly easy to avoid contact with one unsavory individual, much less mobs

At a guess, what’s risen isn’t incels but the social importance of sex-having as defining morality. You see what you look for. The boy down the block who everyone used to be disappointed in, and sad for, is now viewed as an active threat to the social order- including by himself.
-
This seems true even though our society is becoming less natalist at the same time. Why is there more pressure to get laid in a society that doesn't care about birthrates and tolerates other sexualities?

probably because of the whole thing where an incel terrorist killed people and it was on the news
-
Yeah, I'm not aware of anyone saying "there are now people who want sex and don't have it" but rather "these individuals are now connecting and pushing one another to extremism which hurts others."

to be concise, my opinion is that incels represent a whole untapped source of people to be manipulated by dubious agents (as they emerge to mainstream). I don't think the people panicking are panicking for the right reason, but they're responding to the consequences of this.
-
so the temporal landmark is not advent of incels but increased discoverability by those that could benefit off of them.
