back in my freshman year at RIT there was a...homely woman in the floor below mine one day I was in the laundry room and she came up to me and told me some yarn about her creepy ex boyfriend that was clearly meant to be an opening nearly the most uncomfortable I've ever felt

as I understand it the ex-bf was not real and it was basically a pickup line (she deployed it on a couple other guys I knew). She wasn't, like, mean or something, she seemed perfectly nice, but damn I had no idea how to deal with that situation.

Ooo boy, when I was in high school, one girl randomly ran up to me in a hallway with her squad at her back and excitedly asked me on a date and I just said "No." and kept walking. Didn't think much of it then, but that's Excruciating in hindsight.

I had entire hookups at college I didn't want to have bc I couldn't figure out where along the timeline of events I could gracefully bow out and went path of least resistance

Try turning someone down who asks you to officiate their wedding that is super not going to actually happen

Or the chick that told 12y/o me that she was homeless and needed to stay with me

I’ve had the best of all worlds: having to turn down men gracefully. It Is Awkward. And part of why I’m so hesitant to make a play for anyone these days- I really do not want to inflict that experience on anyone else.
