maybe burglars know that they benefit from subverting a structured society and that overtly freeing us from our architectual cage would plunge us into an anarachy in which they keep no advantage

Back in the early 90’s my family home got ransacked when someone threw a grappling hook up onto the roof, then climbed up the front of our home and kicked in the third floor windows (which didn’t have bars.) 90’s man dem badda enuh.

just to nitpick the specific example, every wall I've ever seen has been visibly way more trouble to cut through (drywall + insulation + studs + stuff like wires/pipes) than breaking even a sturdy door is a reason even cops/mil go through doors despite tactical weakness
-
There’s also the fact that cutting through drywall takes a lot of effort, can’t be done quickly, and makes a shitload of noise. Versus picking a lock (quiet) or kicking the door (fast)

I'm pretty sure this is from Burglar's Guide to the City, which is a great book
