I once TA'd an econometrics class for a fairly famous econometrician He pointed out to the students at one point that all of the studies linking cigarettes and cancer were correlational and just let it hang there for twenty seconds of uncomfortable silence before moving on

btw the theory I referenced is that tobacco leaf dried in open air absorbs atmospheric radiation -- i.o.w. the smoke is carcinogenic bc yr essentially inhaling the contents of a naturally occuring sequestration medium

which, if true, implies dramatically reducing cancer risk is a just matter of coming up with a curing process that avoids leaving the leaf exposed to open air for prolonged periods (admittedly COPD and such are still risks and this doesn't address those, but it's not meant to)
