im not totally sure about this specific story rather trying to untangle the impulse to be Angery at just discovering an opposing viewpoint you didnt know existed this seems to happen a lot ive been there for sure

i think deliberately adopting a play + explore mindset is probably helpful here as in many situations a new bizarre viewpoint is often an opportunity to learn something fun and (re)contextualize a bunch of ideas you already have or are familiar with

Maturing for me means learning it is okay to learn in public. That everyone is somewhat wrong, but others can help me be more right. That a genuinely intelligent person is capable of changing their mind and treating conversation as a process of truth-finding, not a thing-to-win.

if I had to bet I would say its not any particular set of views thats predictive of violence but rather the extent to which their adherents feel obliged to smash people who disagree with them!

A fun spin on this might be: you don't even need to be right, you just need to put forward arguments for whatever view seems most underrated, and The Collective will assimilate your arguments & shift slightly closer to the truth overall
