I'm not 100% sure how to even apply for jobs in other fields. And I'd bet they have their own backroom-ish networking considerations. "I got a writing gig because I knew such-and-such." Well, I don't know any writing people looking for new hires with no credentials.

Man, what would that even mean? To just abandon part of my identity? I can't see a path forward to anything else besides it either, so I'd be jumping out of a plane after forgetting what a parachute even is. How do you plan for that when you're already in the air?

And what if I fail yet again at whatever it is I'm supposed to do next—if that's anything at all? Do I just starve next time?

We, like, actually do have to have a Conversation about how we present various explicit threats of death in the event of failure as righteous features of capitalism to kids. "It's the only incentive structure that works," he said as he slit another povertous person's throat.

I remember some platonic concept of the poorhouse, but we don't fund any poorhouses anymore—if we ever did—and any ethical discussions in school usually had the unstated assumption that nobody in the class will end up there.

If you're assuming there's no chance you'll end up poor (with your education?), it's WAY easier to make the argument that poor people don't deserve breaks from the government they didn't "earn." You "earned" your education and assume you'll "earn" the job that "will" come after.

Meanwhile, I know people in my high school ended up homeless and others died, causes ranging from murder to a bizarre death in a Seattle river. Is the "realistic," "logical," "fair" position really that we must totally write those people off, rather than help them out of trouble?

Personally, I didn't know Danny well, but I'd prefer the version of the world where he had the means to move out of his parents' house in our neighborhood and got to marry his girlfriend and be a parent. He was shot in the face in our neighborhood while driving to get gas.

I do, but my network fragmented immediately after graduation and moving thousands of miles away didn't help. I haven't reached out much because I don't want them to think I'm only interested in my job search. That's how it's usually panned out, and hate it.
