do modern philosophers have anything to say about how to lead a good life? if not, when was that mission ended? and why?

Hilary Putnam wrote quite a bit on one aspect of this https://www.amazon.com/Jewish-Philosophy-Guide-Life-Wittgenstein-ebook/dp/B008P94QXA … - despite being in the analytical fold which is generally not associates with "philosophies of life" -- and cites other modern philosophers who do. Plus, would anyone who writes on ethics do so by defn?

Maybe! I see the modern ethics stuff as kind of . . . I guess abstract and deontological, both of which feel removed from human experience? But I'm not making this super legible which makes me suspect I don't actually understand my objection

You would undoubtedly enjoy Putnam's book - particularly the latter sections that discuss ethics and Levinas work in ethics. Overall and in the case of Levinas specifically there's a lot of focus on philosophy of life or (and I found this very salient) of religion sans ontology.
