do modern philosophers have anything to say about how to lead a good life? if not, when was that mission ended? and why?

Too much focus on the meta-ethical? That's the irony: practical philosophy (political science, ethics) tends to be very heavily theoretical (where have you seen a perfectly Rawlsian liberalism or True Communism or libertarian utopia or *smirks* actually principled conservatism?)

You would undoubtedly enjoy Putnam's book - particularly the latter sections that discuss ethics and Levinas work in ethics. Overall and in the case of Levinas specifically there's a lot of focus on philosophy of life or (and I found this very salient) of religion sans ontology.
