Imagine this: You can think yourself progressive and still be racist. Racism colonizes the imagination. The only way to not be racist is to work at being anti racist and to rewire the imagination. Anti racist is not a static or default position; it’s work.

And the particular work of white Americans. I keep thinking about what Frederick Douglass said, about the moral laziness of white people in his time, and he predicted how it would end in bloodshed if we did not stand up to tyranny. And history proved him right.

That work is a necessity and part of your daily life. So I’m not sure exactly your reference, but if you are suggesting it’s unfair for white Americans to do additional unpaid mental labor, I can’t agree with you. I would call that labor catching up.
