it's really weird thinking back how central churches used to be to day to day life kind of bet again government taking over social support killed religion as it was more than Science

Tim Carney's "Alienated America" is largely about this More broadly, institutions are everything. America lost churches, but also lost Rotary, Kiwanis, etc. "Elite" institutions seem to have survived, though. Uni obviously, but also book clubs, etc.

Carney's "Alienated America" is also in conversation with Putnam's "Bowling Alone" re: institutions dying. Also, says Carney, single parenthood in the rust belt and appalachia killed the PTA. But this doesn't happen in affluent neighborhoods, so elites continue to thrive.
