I think the Stagnateens ended somewhere in 2016ish and now we're in Socialmediaties

That would mean the Stagnateens correlate with Obama's presidency. Wonder when socialmediaties will end, and what will come after?

strong agree. the "war on turrrrism" phase started winding down in 2006 with the appointment of Robert Gates repacling Rumsfeld as SecDef and the Fallujah "surge" laying the groundwork for the [really really long and drawn out] withdrawal of ground troops from Iraq.

by the time of Obama's inauguration in January 2009 the most salient "fuckers got away with it!" problem had transitioned from Bush admin warcrimes to Financial Industry securities risk mismanagement

Ah, but the "dotcom burst" and post-9/11 recession had a very similar feel, just attenuated compared to 2008.

And all the same political and cultural fault-lines were there... basically same tribes regarding immigration, threat of Islam, the Forever War, abortion, gun rights, Coastal vs. Heartland, etc. etc.

sort of agree. There was the dual concerns for "soft-recession / terrorism" in the early aughts. My vision of the post-aughts is that it started with the double whammy of mobile technology taking off and the great recession and everything spills out of that.

2006: Facebook opens to all, Twitter founded. 2007: iPhone introduced. 2008: The bottom falls out of the economy. 2019: People left behind by the eventual economic recovery are lectured on Facebook and Twitter that they don’t appreciate their mobile devices enough. Yep.
