i had the idea that using one of the 99 names of God was near-universal for arabic muslims but as i reflect i have no basis for this belief

Using the names directly is actually a faux pas since it's equivalent of comparing oneself to god, Muslim theophorics almost always used abdul- ('servant of') prefix, i.e Abdul-Aziz ('servant of the Almighty')

It's not obligatory (my name doesn't have theophoric in it, I'm not an Arab but my name is Arabic like most Muslims), but it's very common - like 'Muhammad'!
