Sometimes that means you can draw a practical conclusion -- "this intervention improves this outcome" -- without knowing how it works!

Sometimes I wonder if the awesome powers given to us by molecular biology -- genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, etc -- have trained some to believe that biology is like a coloring book where you're not "done" till every piece is colored.

Would argue this is a result of doing biology. Every molecular biologist has had dozens of failed hypotheses based on what appeared to be sound logic at the time, that turned out to be bullshit, because most of the time biology isn't very logical.

Causal inference in biology is *hard,* much harder than in physics. In some cases it may be easier, but there is a certain amount of learned helplessness, based on brutal experience. We don't trust mechanism free hypotheses, because even *with* a mechanism our hypotheses fail.

all subjects more complex than biology are actually impossible i'm only half joking

although biology is a weird case econ is hard for lots of reasons but there is an order to it biology always struck me as an exercise in new people coming in and trying to make sense of 4 billion years worth of crufty-as-fuck undocumented code and its consequences

But there is some order to that crufty code :)

The crufty code can be abstracted away, and then you get order just as in economics.

Relatedly, I think "humans can do better designs than biology b/c we can plan ahead" is clearly true but to lesser degree than some claim. Iterated design is Good Actually, you learn a lot about what works by actually trying things. e.g. pros of agile development over waterfall

it's a trade off. you get the ability to do things that seem impossible, but troubleshooting something that seems impossible is doubly impossible
