was thinking about getting succulents "but those cool multicolored succulents that are kind of bulge-y and all over the place" then i realized i was thinking about sea cucumbers

Most of the species can't really be kept healthy indoors without a grow light, and they specifically need the lighting in order to retain that kind of coloration. (Speaking as someone who now owns too many supplemental gadgets to keep my succulents alive.)

Haworthias come in some interesting shapes and are more likely to be okay without supplemental lighting, though they'll still be green in color. (As well as Aloes, but they're more normal.)

There's also a number of species of caudiciforms which have a specific type of weird aesthetic and can handle lower light, and I've also had luck with some of my euphorbias. Both of those types of succulents are often (always in the case of euphorbias) toxic to varying degrees.

You might be able to do okay with some of the others if you have an unusually bright window, but I'm kind of skeptical about how many people really have access to enough natural light. (I know that was rambling; I've spent too much time thinking about these kinds of things.)
