I don't think any faction should expect to get what they want out of a major change to the constitution. I think it should be changed because it's broken.

they already did in the historical civil war. I doubt it would have influenced the outcome. the northern states had far greater population size, industrial base, exploited natural resources, and transportation infrastructure. it was always a mismatch.

but that's besides the point. what I'm interested in thinking about is how international economic competition would have rendered the slave plantation economies obsolete without a war being fought over it. the British Caribbean colonies abolished slavery earlier, in 1833.
