if you ever wonder what my evil self-interested motive is for harping on moderating how we treat the outgroup, especially the freshly minted outgroup, it's the conviction i've had since i was a tiny child that any social group will sooner or later turn on me like a pack of wolves

you can tell this is something i really believe because it doesn't feel like a belief, it feels like *knowledge*. i don't honestly know how anybody with even a touch of the ol' autism hasn't reached the same conclusion, but takes all kinds i guess

if you consider yourself safely ensconced in your ingroup and so have no stake in it moderating its habits, my intuition tells me that you're either a wide-eyed ingenue, which is forgivable, or somebody who's never been anything but one of the popular kids, which is not
