Working in family law is a magnificent reality check for grand narratives about human relationships. The thing you’re sure is representative? I have seen it, yes. Also its mirror image, and a host of stories which exist at right angles to its assumptions.

One example: an extremely successful woman dragged down by a louse of a husband, who contributes nothing. Recognizable story, no? How about the part where she, a schoolteacher, is offered a job in tech at ~15 times her previous salary level, with no experience?

I only got a capsule description, but there was an interstate move and thus a cost-of-living bump as well I think. The total compensation is also a partial guess, as it’s $400k + stock options that she seems excited about.

Someone literally stopped work and came into my office with bug eyes to tell this story. I have no idea, man; my working guess is that she was wildly underemployed before and probably has an incredible educational background.

what role was she hired for? devs don't make that much. that's senior management salary level.

are you sure it wasn't $400K stock options included? (like, more normal 6 figure base salary, but the company stock was doing well that year)

option/rsu grant spread over a few years could plaaaausibly hit that if you count the full grant in the figure like say 160k base plus grant of 60k/year over four years still remarkably high for a fresh hire
