No money in it any more, so competent (=expensive) people were fired first and replaced with perky 20yo interns with taste for drama and talent for idiocy.

Whom the Gods would destroy, they first raise up. A century of worshiping the Guardians of Democracy went bad because it turns out they were the moneygrubbing, agenda-pushing, spin-doctoring and occasionally outright lying bastards the people they ruined claimed they were.
-
Not all of them, of course. Most of them were just doing a job, some of them really were crusaders. But enough of them were that suddenly, realizing they'd basically been running everything for decades by claiming impartiality and the moral high ground really pissed everybody off

Remember those movies where the hero exposes the evil conspiracy to the press and the villain was like "oh no, my plan is ruined!" They don't make movies like that anymore. Not since Spotlight and The Post, and those were set in the past.

People don't suddenly start to insult journalists because they think journalists are a powerful enemy that wants to brainwash us with their evil ideology or whatever. On the contrary, they began to insult them when they realized they were powerless. They disappointed us.

Decline in trust over past ~50 yrs in US press was also happening to many other institutions & in many other rich Western democracies at the same time. Press- or country-specific explanations obscure this. Trust in military & cops has been quite stable in most of these countries.
-
Only a few countries have high trust in both press & military: Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, etc. High & stable trust in nonviolent institutions/professions is actually abnormal in WEIRD countries.
