It takes a pretty broad view of aesthetics to include decisions to avoid injury under that umbrella.

There are certainly liminal cases where one suffers for fun, but the extremes seem clear cut. When I say "I would prefer not to lose a finger" I don't really mean it in the same sense that I prefer steak to tofu.

avoiding mutilation is probably more aesthetic than moral I bet avulsions feel and look terrible

I wouldn't say it's moral either. It's just a nonaesthetic preference. The organism demands integrity and homeostasis as a condition of its existence, not as a matter of taste.
