pretty much everything about universities start with "profs are hired for their research". when I was doing a PhD and thought I wanted to be a prof, I asked my advisor for advice on the teaching aspect of the job. he told me to stop wasting my time and focus on research

our graduate chair took all the first year TAs into a room our first day and shut the door "You need to spend exactly as much time teaching as it will take for your funding to be renewed. Anything past this is career suicide. Your career is research."

This just made American students mad though, because they typically got teaching assistantships due to superior English skills, while foreign students got research assistantships.
