I’m getting ratio’d for pointing out that it’s disturbing some people are celebrating the layoffs of journalists. It feels like an illustrative snapshot of the unhealthy climate on this site — and perhaps our country.https://twitter.com/oliverdarcy/status/1088523857567338497 …

What's wrong with retributive justice? Tit-for-tat is a highly effective strategy in the iterated prisoner's dilemma.

Reciprocal altruism is the best strategy but we've already endured a number of iterations of shit like this https://www.huffingtonpost.com/christian-gabriel/if-you-dont-vote-democrat_b_10425968.html … so same difference I guess

Reciprocal altruism is not actually altruism. It's simply exchange of goods with a time delay.

Well it's assuming the best in round one and paying up front. Then if they betrayed, fuck 'em in round two.

in many cases conditional forgiveness is ideal, depends how you structure the game punishment is generally costly and difficult to do well :/

They'd have to not betray for two turns though to be effectively forgiven. If they betrayed in the first round I doubt they'd have the patience. It'll just be alternating betrayal. A betrays B in N because B betrayed in N-1, so B betrays again in N+1.

I mean as a general rule. If you think that you can turn over a new leaf and instantly get head pats for it you're gonna have a bad time. The other person's betrayal was already queued.
