It's because it is difficult putting a global earth on a flat map. Because of this, there is a size distortion as you move further away from the equator. The Mercator projection offers really accurate shape in exchange for size.

Africa isn't affected because it straddles the equator, where the distortion is negligible. Mercator is useful for navigation b/c you can chart any course on it in a straight line, but it can have… problematic implications when used outside that context.

No need to mansplain. But just to reiterate my point. Why is Europe over expanded? Nobody uses a world map to navigate. You use scaled maps & charts. This stinks of my country can’t be that small & we’re really important on a world scale so make us look bigger there’s a good chap
