Most of the big tech companies actually hire economists at this point. Amazon in particular has something like 250 PhDs from across micro/metric subfields for crunchy projects, but I know Uber hires economists as well, also Zillow but their work is less glorious.

I am quite aware, having interviewed for Amazon and worked for another blue chip company before. I think the implication of "failed" should be clear - don't have a PhD.

Yup same. Amazon maybe cares, Uber didn't in their last job listing. Doesn't seem to matter at all for DS roles outside ML engineering specialties.

Kind of wish I made friends with the dude in a sister program who fucked up his thesis (was working on complex econometrics problems...didn't quite work out) and ended up working for Uber.
