Seeing this as a consumerist/commodified sense of society seems to be flawed to me. Driven by same anti-consumerism as anti-capitalists - products mentioned here can be appreciated, enjoyed and expressions of ourselves and socialisation (drinking with friends, restaurants)

It’s a real shame that the non-economic case for capitalism is not made more often! This is a great ad which not only signifies how the liberal order makes people richer, but also unlocks new (social) choices and gives us what we want!

When Dan Hanan etc rail for a “global Britain” - I always think they’re being taken as schmucks because they are riding the coat tails of anti-global forces. I think exactly the same for those who rail against consumerism in favour of High Art.

“God these youths are offended so easily” I yell as I lament the decline of Western civilisation because of a bank ad celebrating chicken tikka masala.

Mugwump @anonmugwumpReplying to @dkpseudoBy the West, I just mean the liberal international order as an institutional framework, rather than a cultural alignment between countries. Ikenberry is wrong about Iraq, but Liberal Levithan is good framework. https://press.princeton.edu/titles/9410.html …1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
