I mean we've had multiple wars that straight bad things we did, are stoked if a job puts us above the poverty line, and our planet is visibly decaying. Dadaism and Nihilism are back for a reason. Romance takes time and money we don't have.

I just dont believe this particular story there are Junger/TRIBE arguments below that are more convincing but I mean the west hasnt had a famine in centuries, our air is the cleanest its been since the industrial revolution, theres been no domestic war since 1865 why *now* ?

We watched the twin towers fall, live, in school. We see the ice caps melt daily. We don't see fireflies anymore. We watch our military commit terrorist acts abroad. We see the next generation getting killed in schools. Neo-liberalism keeps us too poor to do what our govt won't.

I'm a bit cynical so, sorry if I'm wrong. But is this one of those extremely fallacious Boomer things wherein you pretend a particular trauma is greater than another? As if one shitty thing makes another shitty thing not shitty?

No, where did I say verdun cancels out how bad those other things are? Youre saying people dont want love in the modern day because of these great tragedies you’ve listed, Im pointing out how flawed that line of reasoning is by pointing out much greater tragedies have occurred.

But yes, verdun is much more terrible than the twin towers, all school shootings combined, any economic disaster in the past couple generations, and was a worse act of war than anything anyone had been able to manage since (terrorist or otherwise)
