My working theory of dating apps is that they're fundamentally broken because they express bateman's principle to a comical degree.

My theory is they're fundamentally broken because they have no incentive to create successful pairings; this removes the users from the app.

Maybe that's the ultimate cause, but not the immediate one. I think the illusion of choice results in preposterous expectations among female users, so that 10% of the men are going on first dates with 90% of the women and never dropping out of the market.

I think that user preferences in how online dating works has driven development of them in a pathological direction such that this has gotten worse over time.

I blame the platforms. Tinder uses a single dimension of attractiveness, which reduces to the feature with most broad appeal: physical attractiveness. You're gated by this metric, so you can't calibrate your signaling for "niche markets". Thus: top 5% men win, all others lose.

You can reveal other things about yourself though through pics and a description. You can show your level of education, your job, stuff you own, etc

Yes but at the end of the day, everyone is squeezed through the same Elo ranking which determines who even appears on your feed. That's what I meant by one-dimensional.https://www.fastcompany.com/3054871/whats-your-tinder-score-inside-the-apps-internal-ranking-system …
