do any major issues really turn on IQ? i'm pretty sure that if tomorrow everyone woke up believing the hardest-line thinking on IQ, we'd all still be having more or less the exact same policy debates. maybe the justifications would change slightly.

Hm. In a strict sense this might be true; but I think a lot of social narratives hinge on a kind of tabula rasa view of human development, and those become intractable quickly if you add in heritable and treatment-resistant ability

do they hinge on them, though, or is that just the most convenient justification of many? it wouldn't even be too hard to swap "we can change IQ/personality" to "we can provide an environment where extant abilities can be well-applied"
