I think the direct meaning is just that IQ tests measure something beyond the ability to take the test, so they correspond to an external reality. This always fascinates me for the divergence between scientific consensus and personal experience. I take IQ seriously, but when I had mine tested they first came back with one number, then a very different number, then “no useful number value can be provided.” Odd.
