A friend shared a story that I think sheds a lot of light on the state of race/class relations in the US.
A teacher overheard Jewish kids discussing how they knew Santa wasn't real, but they wanted to not upset any Christian kids so they were working out what to say.

You can read a lot into that - the practical need for people to not visibly go against mainstream belief, the desire to manipulate appearances from a young age... But what struck me about the story was the amazing impulse to protect and care for people who don't know better.

Now, that impulse - coming from someone who is stronger, or richer, or older than you - is a good and noble one. But what if you had that attitude towards your peers?

I went to Catholic school Figured Santa out over Christmas break in first grade Really excited to tell everyone over lunch They sat there in silence for ten seconds before the Deacon's daughter got this angry look "You don't believe in Santa? Do you believe in JESUS?"
