"how many lines of Shakespeare can ____ quote" i think the vast majority of S. that most can quote comes from 1000s of 3rd hand historical references rather than firsthand appreciation of the OG text Sort of like the bible; most of the best parts I know come from novel titles.

I've been reading the Case Against Education by Bryan Caplan and it's astonishing how little even top students remember from their college majors, let alone ancillary classes. It may be that the era of broad erudition is an illusion.

I'm a BC fan. I'm also a fan of 'great books' liberal arts education. These arent necessarily incompatible ideas.

Have you read it? There's certainly some tension there.

Caplan attempting to convince the reader that his own job is a sinecure created by a confluence of accidents that wouldn't exist in a rationally organized society, while using arguments developed by him and others holding similar jobs, is cute.

That's not true. He doesn't think academic research is a waste. The book doesn't address people who get PhDs because of course those produce value.

I'm not sure what would go into the calculation of net in this case. He looks at being a professor as a job like any other and a PhD is occupational training for that job.

But what's the opportunity cost of getting a PhD if your goal is a job that requires a PhD?

i wonder if you're talking about personal value and i'm talking about social value, in the sense of aggregation

I mean, he'd certainly prefer an outcome where fewer people became professors because he wants fewer students, but he's looking at that as just the market adjusting. Currently, there are many PhD positions to fill, so it's as valid an income earning occupation as any other.
